Getting started
Controls
New School 99 plays like a modern action game: keys to move, the mouse to look, clicks to fight. Right-click still opens every option, just like you remember. Prefer a controller? Plug it in.
Moving and looking
| Key or button | What it does |
|---|---|
| W A S D | Run |
| Hold Shift | Sprint (uses stamina) |
| Hold Ctrl | Walk |
| Mouse | Look around; the wheel zooms |
| C | Show or hide the cursor. With a panel open, C switches between the panel and the camera, so you can run with your inventory open. |
| Right click | The right-click menu with every option. With the cursor hidden it opens at your crosshair; pick an option and the camera is yours again. |
| Middle mouse drag | Turn the camera while the cursor is showing |
There's no run energy to watch while jogging: only sprinting, rolls and attacks use stamina (see Stamina and Agility).
Fighting
| Key or button | What it does |
|---|---|
| Left click | Attack where you aim; hold it to keep attacking |
| Space or a side mouse button | Dodge roll |
| Middle mouse tap | Lock on to an enemy, tap again to let go |
| Flick the mouse left or right | Switch lock-on target |
| Hold Shift + W, then click | Sprint attack |
| 1 to 9 | Combat hotbar (below) |
How all of it works: Free combat.
The combat hotbar
- The row of nine slots at the bottom of the screen, under your health, stamina and special bars. Keys 1 to 9 use it (F1 to F9 work too).
- Key 1 is your weapon's special attack. The next keys hold your god powers once you've unlocked them.
- The rest fill themselves for your weapon style (food, potions, prayers), or set them up yourself. Using a slot takes the same time as clicking the item.
- Your bar is saved on your account and comes back every time you log in.
Panels and chat
| Key | Opens |
|---|---|
| Esc | The Menu (or closes what's open) |
| Tab | Inventory |
| E | Equipment |
| X | Combat (attack styles) |
| K | Stats |
| P | Prayer |
| B | Magic |
| Q | Quests |
| F | Friends |
| G | The Pantheon (the gods) |
| T | Travel |
| M | World map |
| Enter | Start typing in chat |
| Tab while typing | Switch between Server and Public chat |
These are the default keys. Change them in Game Settings > Keybinds. More about the Menu: The Codex menu.
Game Settings
Open the Menu (Esc) and pick Settings.
- Controls > Lock-on button: middle mouse, mouse button 4 or 5, R or V.
- Controls > NPC left-click: what left-clicking a monster you can fight does. Attack (the default), Talk-to first or By combat level. Bankers, shopkeepers and other people you can't fight always talk on left click.
- Interface > Interface size: on Auto, chat, panels, menus and the hotbar size themselves to your screen, following your Windows scaling and big 1440p or 4K monitors. Or pick a size yourself from 100% to 200%. It changes right away.
- Keybinds: change the keys for Inventory, Equipment, Combat, Stats, Prayer, Magic, Quests, Friends, World map, Pantheon and Travel. Pick a key another panel uses and the two swap. Movement, roll, sprint, camera, chat and hotbar keys (and your lock-on key) can't be used. Reset to defaults puts every key back.
- Display > Building roofs: Default, Hide when inside, Always hide or Always show.
- Codex menu and Combat hotbar: how the Menu opens, which side panels sit on, and where the hotbar shows.
Coming soon
- Coming soon Pickpocket left-click: an option to make Pickpocket the left click on people you can steal from.
Every graphics setting can also be changed before you log in: Settings > All graphics settings on the login screen. Handy if a setting ever stops the game from loading.
Controller
Plug in a controller and play: Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo and most other pads work, and controller support is on by default. You can switch between the controller and your keyboard and mouse at any time.
Already playing through Steam Input, DS4Windows or reWASD? Nothing changes: the game notices and steps aside, and your setup works exactly as before.
| Button (Xbox / PlayStation) | What it does |
|---|---|
| Left stick | Move; tilt further to run |
| L3 (click the left stick) | Sprint |
| Right stick | Turn the camera |
| RT / R2 | Attack; hold it to keep attacking |
| B / Circle | Dodge roll |
| R3 (click the right stick) | Lock on to an enemy; flick the right stick to switch target |
| A / Cross | Use what's in front of you: Bank on a banker, Trade on a shopkeeper, Attack on an enemy |
| X / Square | All the options on that target |
| RB / LB (R1 / L1) | Step through the things near you |
| Y / Triangle | The action wheel: world map, travel, Pantheon, stats, chat, friends, quests and Combat |
| D-pad | Inventory (up), Equipment (right), Prayer (down), Magic (left) |
| Hold LT / L2 | Your combat hotbar (below) |
| View / Create | Camera or cursor, like the C key |
| Start / Options | The Menu; hold it for the Controller window |
- Hotbar: hold LT and the face buttons, the D-pad and RB fire its slots: X, Y, B and A are slots 1 to 4 (your special, then your god powers), the D-pad is 5 to 8 and RB is 9. LT + LB switches between your Melee, Ranged and Magic bars.
- Bank, Grand Exchange, shops, dialogues and the Menu all work on the D-pad: A selects, X shows the options, Y is the quick option (like Withdraw-All), B goes back, and LB / RB switch tabs. Chat, searches and amounts get an on-screen keyboard with a number pad.
- Button prompts on the hotbar and around the game switch to your controller's buttons (Xbox, PlayStation or Switch) as soon as you pick it up, and back to keys when you use the keyboard.
- A skips signposts and plain furniture, so it goes to the thing you most likely want. Moving the stick cancels a walk to something, and B leaves a conversation at once.
- Controller window (hold Start): rebind any button (pick one that's taken and the two swap), choose the Default or Southpaw preset, set stick deadzones, how sprint works, camera speed and invert, aim assist, which button prompts to show and whether A or B confirms. Reset to defaults any time. These settings are saved on your PC.
- You can play the whole intro on a controller.
